ringo 70: "peace and love"
Examiner: "Yesterday, Ringo Starr turned 70. The former Beatles drummer spent the entire day in New York City, making an evening appearance with his All-Starr band at the venerable Radio City Music Hall. (--) Inside, the band played and then luminaries Yoko Ono, Steve Van Zandt, Jeff Lynne, Nils Lofgren, Joe Walsh, and Starr's son Zak Starkey joined the musician-of-the-hour in a nostalgic reunion on stage. As if that wasn't enough of a jolt, Paul McCartney surprised everyone, showing up on the magnificent Deco stage at Radio City Music Hall in New York City to sing with his former colleague Ringo. What a way to celebrate 70. Happy Birthday, Mr. Starr."
The Huffington Post: "Yoko Ono, who spent most of her time on stage dancing, gave Ringo a mid-song birthday shout-out. An official list of those on stage has not been released, but Joe Walsh, Angus Young, Nils Lofgren, Jon Bon Jovi, Mick Jones, Steve Van Zandt, Brian Johnson, Max Weinberg, and Jeff Lynne were among the many dancing, smiling, and laughing on stage."
"when you wish upon a tree at the hirshhorn"
Smithsonian.com (July 8th 2010): "Some wish for their mothers. Some wish for their fathers. Some wish for siblings or friends, children or partners. Some wishes are rather rude. Some wishes are earnest and sweet. Yoko Ono’s Washington D.C. Wish Tree is back in bloom in the Hirshhorn sculpture garden this summer."
"yoko ono’s revenge"
The New York Observer (July 6th 2010): "Yoko Ono stepped up to a microphone in the cavernous atrium of the Museum of Modern Art last week and began to wail. Standing at her own Voice Piece for Soprano, 1961, she inaugurated MoMA's sweeping reinstallation of its contemporary art galleries. "Contemporary Art from the Collection" consciously seeks to right some past art-historical slights-and includes nine Yoko Ono artworks. It's a triumph of sorts for the highly controversial conceptual artist: Thirty-nine years ago, MoMA had turned her away. Not that she let that stop her. "Since the museum wouldn't give her an exhibition, she curated an exhibition of her own," said MoMA director Glenn Lowry, gesturing at the photographs of her renegade show that are now installed in the galleries. Called The Museum of Modern FArt, the 1971 piece, which went on to became somewhat famous in the alternative Fluxus art community, involved Ms. Ono strolling in as a visitor and then setting scores of flies loose in the MoMA sculpture garden."
lennon catalogue remastered
3News (July 7th 2010): "John Lennon's solo catalogue has been digitally remastered, and will be out in time for the Beatles legend's 70th birthday. Seven records, from 1970's John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band through to 1984's posthumous Milk and Honey, have been remastered at Abbey Road. His 1980 comeback album, Double Fantasy, will also be available in a "stripped down" remixed form, similar to the Beatles' own Let It Be… Naked."
"In this very special year, which would have seen my husband and life partner John reach the age of 70, I hope that this remastering / reissue programme will help bring his incredible music to a whole new audience," says Ono. A 15-track greatest hits called Power To The People will also be available, as well as four themed discs – Roots, covering rock'n'roll; Working Class Hero, his political songs; Woman, love songs; and Borrowed Time, described as 'songs about life'. "His lyrics are as relevant today as they were when they were first written," says Ono."
Examiner about the remasters: "Along with all the other goodies to be offered, this is nothing short of a gigantic undertaking, which has involved Yoko Ono, Capitol, EMI, and former co-producer Jack Douglas."
